RAIN or Shine will not be with JR Quinahan when they face Talk ‘N Text in Game Five of the best-of-seven championship series of the 40th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup at 7 p.m. tonight at the Araneta Coliseum.
PBA Commissioner Chito Salud ordered the suspension of the 6’6 center Quinahan for one game for throwing the ball at Talk ‘N Text’s Matt Ganuelas-Rosser’s face during a scuffle with 9:47 still remaining in Game Four on Wednesday.
Besides the suspension, Quinahan, was also fined P50,000. His teammates Jireh Ibanes and Ganuelas-Rosser were fined P40,000 each. However, Ganuelas-Rosser and Ibanes were not suspended.
“This Office considers the act of hitting an opponent with the basketball as a highly-provocative and treacherous act. It is not unlike throwing a punch without warning and worse, without the attendant risk of retaliation. We did not find this factual condition in the incident involving Rosser and Ibañes. Further, Quiñahan took a fighting stance immediately after throwing the ball at Rosser for which he is fined the additional sum of P10,000,” Salud said in a press statement on Thursday.
Coach Yeng Guiao of the Painters blamed the referees’ failure to control the physicality of the game that led to the fight. Both teams are now in a 2-2 tie with Rain or Shine winning Game Two (116-108) and Game Three (109-97), while Talk ‘N Text won Game One (99-92) and Game Four (99-92).
Guiao said that since the long series is now reduced to best-of-three affair, he is expecting more intense games the rest of the way with emotions running high.
Meanwhile, Jayson Castro of Talk ‘N Text was named the 2015 Commissioner’s Cup Best Player of the Conference, while Wayne Chism bagged the Best Import award. Chism was the third import of Rain or Shine to bring home the honor after Arizona Reid in the 2011 and 2014 Governor’s Cup and Jamelle Cornley in the 2012 Governor’s Cup.
