Two referees were suspended on Tuesday by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for their failure to call a five-second ball-hogging and backcourt violation during the remaining seconds of the GlobalPort versus Ginebra knockout quarterfinals match on Sunday.
Referee Rommel Gruta was suspended for the rest of the Philippine Cup for failing to call a five-second ball-hogging violation on GlobalPort’s Stanley Pringle in the waning seconds of the game.
Referee Edward Aquino was suspended also for the rest of the Philippine Cup for his failure to call a backcourt violation when Pringle’s foot stepped on the line during that game.
Those non-calls denied Ginebra of ball possession that could have allowed them to nullify GlobalPort’s one point 84-83 lead.
GlobalPort’s victory earned them their first semifinals appearance.
The PBA technical committee made the deliberation during the referees meeting with PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa.
