PCA, PALAWAN SIGN SALT FERTILIZER SUPPLY DEAL

The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the local government of Palawan for the supply of salt fertilizers for the coconut industry in the province. Under the agreement, Palawan will supply PCA with 300,000 bags of agricultural-grade salt fertilizers annually starting 2015, at a minimum price of P300 per 50-kilogram bag, through government-to-government procurement. “This scheme will ensure that the MOU is corruption-free,” said PCA administrator Euclides Forbes. The deal is also expected to help revive the province’s salt-making industry The use of agricultural-grade salt to fertilize trees (2 kg per tree) has been shown to be a beneficial and practical means of increasing the yield of coconut by as much as 25 percent during the first year of application, and by up to 50-100 percent on the second and third year of continuous application.
