The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has identified four local government units (LGUs) in Eastern Visayas as focused interventions areas upon the advice of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala. The 90-day focused intervention will cover the municipalities of Palo, Tanuaun and Tolosa in Leyte, and Tacloban City that host around one million of the 13 million trees totally damaged by typhoon Yolanda, said Region VIII manager Edilberto Nierva. PCA is now fast tracking the clearing and cleaning of coconut debris to prevent the infestation of Rhino beetles. Some 40,000 coconut trees were turned into lumber that was used in the shelter program for affected farmers. Meanwhile, the agency cautioned the public against buying coconut lumber from dealers not registered with it. It said it is monitoring the mushrooming dealers to compel them to register.
