The Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF) made waves in the prestigious 2015 International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Dragon Boat Racing Championships as it bagged four gold medals at the Welland International Flatwater Center in Ontario, Canada.
The Filipino paddlers claimed their first gold medal in the Senior A Mixed 500m Small Boat after checking in at two minutes and 26.905 seconds, beating the Italians, who submitted 2:34.086 good for silver medal.
A few hours later, the squad topped the Premier Mixed 500m Small Boat with a time of 2:14.056. Macau settled for second (2:16.838) while Hungary wound up third (2:17.764).
“Our goal is to have a representation in the Olympics of this sport. To have our Philippine flag unfurled and raised at the world stage. Salute to the navy men, civilians and professionals who made us proud,” said PDBF member Judith Hakim.
The PDBF continued its impressive showing on the second day, ruling the Premier Mixed 200m small boat event (50.839) and Senior A Mixed 200m small boat category (56.276).
“I am mighty proud of every man and woman that represented the Philippines in Canada. Amid all the odds you fought. The results wouldn’t tell the problems you had to go through. That you just keep going. I salute you all. Yun lumaban maski dehado. Yun sumagwan para sa Pilipinas,” added Hakim.
Recently, the PDBF won one gold and three bronzes in the 2015 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival International Races and a silver in the 2015 Macau International Invitational Dragon Boat Championship. They also earned two golds, one silver and one bronze in the 2014 IDBF Dragon Boat World Cup in China and one gold and two silvers in the 2014 Asian Dragon Boat Championships in Macau.
