Asserting that all-out war is never a solution to problems in the South, thousands of peace advocates, musicians and artists from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, together with lawmakers will hold a synchronized nationwide event called ‘National Day Toward Healing for Justice, Unity and Peace’ today to mark the 40th day of the Fallen 44.
Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr., former senators Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and Santanina Rasul, evangelical leader Bro. Eddie Villanueva, actor Robin Padilla, Rep. Barry Gutierrez, former beauty queen Gemma Cruz-Araneta and civil society leaders are expected to join the commencement of the “All-Out-Peace” campaign to be held at Quezon City Memorial Circle Peace Bell area starting at 5 a.m.
Highlights of the event include the ‘Fajr’ or Muslim dawn prayer, followed by Ringing of the Peace Bell. At 8 a.m., a photo exhibit will open, followed by video showing and art activities. Solidarity messages will be delivered and performances from various artists will commence by noontime after the Dhuhr prayer.
A Caravan to EDSA People Power Monument and National Day of Prayer Toward Justice, Unity and Peace will also be held at 6 p.m.
The “all-out-peace” campaign aims to take a stand for peace by rejecting war or any form of armed violence as a response to Mindanao conflicts, including the Mamasapano incident in January that led to the killing of 44 commandos of the Philippine National Police–Special Action Force.
In support of this initiative, the House of Representatives and the Senate recently endorsed the All-Out Peace campaign with the approval of House Resolution 1952 and Senate Resolution 1204 declaring March 6 as National Day of Healing for Unity, All-Out-Peace and All-Out-Justice.
Senators Angara, Teofisto Guingona 3rd, Aquilino Pimentel 3rd and Paolo Benigno Aquino 4th were the main sponsors of the Senate resolution, with Senators Grace Poe, Francis Escudero, Pia Cayetano, Alan Peter Cayetano, Franklin Drilon, Antonio Trillanes 4th, Nancy Binay, Joseph Victor Ejercito and Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as co-authors to signify a ‘unanimous approval’ senators.
Similar activities will take place in Davao, Cotabato, Cagayan, Iligan, Kidapawan, Zamboanga, Tawi-Tawi, Marawi, Bacolod, Dumaguete and Mamasapano (Maguindanao).
Convenors of the All-Out-Peace campaign include Initiatives for International Dialogue, Mindanao Peace Weavers, Friends of the Bangsamoro, Generation Peace Network, Mindanao Coalition of Development NGO Networks, Mindanao CSO Peace Platform, Waging Peace-Philippines and Women Engaged in Action.
