• Perlas suffers another thrashing


    Perlas Pilipinas’ woes continued as it yielded to Chinese Taipei, 53-87, in the top division’s classification round of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Women’s Cup 2017 on Friday at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru, India.

    The women’s national basketball team was outscored in all quarters en route to absorbing its fifth loss in as many games.

    With the loss, the team’s bid to retain its Division A status was threatened.

    France Mae Cabinbin spearheaded the Philippines with 14 points; seven assists and three rebounds while Allana Lim added seven markers.

    Hsi Le Bao finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds while three others scored in double figures for Chinese Taipei, which is facing New Zealand for the fifth place at press time.

    The PH cagebelles were only staring at an eight-point deficit at the end of the opening period but Chinese Taipei turned it into a 13-point spread, 38-25, heading into the halftime.

    The world ranked No. 34 Taiwanese squad persisted to outgun the ranked No. 49 Filipina side in the last two frames, 49-28, to score the rout.

    Perlas is battling North Korea in a crucial game at press time with the winner keeping its place in the elite division.
