Perpetual Help edges Letran for fifth victory


JUNERIC Baloria fired 32 points to lift University of Perpetual Help Altas past Letran Knights, 85-82, on Saturday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament elimination round at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.

Baloria rescued the Altas with his fiery shooting, hitting five triple including two in the pivotal period as they came back from a 13-point deficit early to notch their fifth win in eight matches and tied Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers at the third spot.

Baloria also hauled down six rebounds and was 11-of-21 percent shooting in the field goal, while Earl Scottie Thompson likewise provided the needed lift by finishing with 14 points and Harold Miguel Arboleda had 11. Justine Alano settled with 15 points for the Altas.

With the setback, last year’s runner-up Letran Knights are tied with Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals from eighth to ninth spot with identical 2-6 win-loss slate, just a game ahead over cellar dweller Mapua Institute of Technological Cardinals, who are bearing a 1-7 card.

Meanwhile, the top performers from 10 participating teams will display their wares in the first ever NCAA All-Star Game on Satuday also at The San Juan Arena.

NCAA Management Committee chairman Paul Supan of host Jose Rizal University said they have divided the schools into two teams, the first will be named the East All-Star and the other West All-Star.
