Perpetual pummels Mapua in NCAA volley


Defending champion University of Perpetual Help System Dalta overpowered Mapua Institute of Technology, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20, to jump into a three-way logjam for second place in the men’s division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Allan Jay Sala-an unloaded a match-best 13 hits including nine on kills while Kasim Esmail and Rey Taneo, Jr. scattered 11 and 10 points, respectively, to power the Altas to No. 2 alongside College of St. Benilde and San Beda College on 3-1 (win-loss) records.

Relan Taneo facilitated the Las Pinas-based school’s relentless attacking by dishing out 30 excellent sets.

The win has also slowly but surely restored the confidence of Perpetual Help after it suffered its only loss of the season, a heartbreaking 25-18, 29-27, 23-25, 27-29, 10-15 decision to San Beda on November 20.

“We’re getting our confidence back after our loss,” said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar.

The troika of Sala-an, Esmail and Taneo who came through in the tightly-fought opening set by scoring crucial kills and making key defensive plays up front.

Mapua was just never the same from there as Perpetual Help started to play more aggressive.

The Cardinals, who were led by Rey Arth Andaya’s 11 points, fell to their third defeat against two triumphs.
