SOME 6,000 coconut trees in 15 barangays in Isabela City, Basilan province were destroyed after coconut scale insects recently infested the area, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) reported. Rudy Corsame, PCA head for Isabela City, said the insects must have originated from Batangas province and made its way to the province. PCA said that there were reports of infestation in Batangas and reports said that the insects has been destroying coconut trees in the province. PCA theorized that the scale insect outbreak was wrought by “imbalance or loss of natural enemies” because of excessive use of pesticides or by natural causes such as long drought and climate change.
