Petecio assured of bronze after beating Chinese foe

FILIPINA boxer Nesthy Petecio outclassed Lu Qiong of China assuring herself of a bronze medal in the 2014 AIBA World Women’s Championship at the Halla Gymnasium in Jeju City, South Korea.

The 22-year-old Davao del Sur lass won 40-36 in all scorecards of the three judges to secure her fourth straight victory in the tourney. She will face equally tough Tiara Brown of the United States on Sunday in the semifinals. Getting past Brown means she’ll fight for the gold on Monday.

“Nesthy is in superb condition and is grimly determined yet has kept her humorous disposition outside the ring. We are optimistic about her chances but Nesthy herself is not leaving anything to chance,” said team manager Karina Picson.

Mentoring Petecio are coaches Roel Velasco and Violito Payla who both cited the height advantage of Brown over Petecio.

“Matagal ko nang inasam-asam ito at marami na rin akong sakripisyo. Sana magbunga kung bibigyan tayo ng swerte [I’ve longed for this for a long time and I’ve sacrificed so much. Hopefully and with some luck, everything will come to fruition],” said Petecio, whose best finished so far are two silver medals in Southeast Asian Games Indonesia (2011) and Myanmar (2013). She, however, won the gold medal in the prestigious China Open in 2012.
