FILIPINA boxer Nesthy Petecio crushed Manel Meharzi of Algeria to notch her second win in the 2014 AIBA World Women’s Championship at the Halla Gymnasium in Jeju Island, South Korea.
The power-punching Petecio, fighting in the featherweight (57-kilogram) class connected heavily with left and right combinations to dispose off her opponent touted to be the best boxer in the Algerian line-up.
She caught her opponent with three-shot combos punctuated with wicked rights that prompted the Russian referee to give the Algerian two standing 8-counts in the third round. The Davao del Sur lass won convincingly 40-35, 40-34 and 40-35 in all three judges’ scorecards.
But flyweight (51 kg.) Irish Magno fell short against 2012 World Championships silver medalist Terry Gordini of Italy and lost 36-40 in all three scorecards.
Another Filipina fighter and current world light flyweight champion Josie Gabuco will make her debut in the tournament against Taiwan’s Pin Meng-Chieh on Tuesday. The event, which attracted 280 boxers from 67 countries, will end on Monday, November 24.
