THIRD seed Petron Blaze faces no. 6 Barako Bull while fourth seed Talk ‘N Text takes on no. 5 San Mig Coffee today at the start of the best-of-three quarterfinals of the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
After the grueling elimination round, the Ginebra Kings topped the standings with 11-3 followed by Rain or Shine with a similar slate. Both are carrying twice-to-beat edge in the next round against no. 7 Globalport (5-9) and no. 8 qualifier respectively. Alaska and Meralco, which figured in a four-way tie with similar 5-9 records, wound-up no. 8 and no. 9 respectively. They were still playing at press time to dispute the last quarterfinal berths.
The winner between Petron and Barako Bull will battle quarterfinalists Rain or Shine or Globalport in the best-of-seven semifinals. Top seed Ginebra, which is still awaiting its quarterfinals opponent, will face the victor between San Mig and Talk ‘N Text in the other semifinals match.
Meanwhile, 5’10 guard Mark Barroca earned the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week plum for the period of January 12 to 19 for powering San Mig Coffee’s victory over Petron Blaze and Talk ‘N Text. San Mig Coffee finished fifth at the end of the elimination round with a 7-7 record.
