Reigning champion Petron and powerhouse Foton will begin their championship showdown in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix 2015 today at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
The Game 1 of the best -of-three series is set at 4 p.m.
The Blaze Spikers, who represented the country in the Asian Volleyball Confederation Asian Women’s Club Championship in Vietnam two months ago, will be parading a star-studded lineup led by Dindin Manabat, Rachel Anne Daquis, Aby Marano and Ces Molina, and Brazilian imports Erica Adachi and Rupia Inck.
Foton, on the other hand, looks to overthrow the title-holders and gain momentum in their first meeting with imports Katie Messing, Lindsay Stalzer and Jaja Santiago leading the charge for the Tornadoes.
“They have a huge advantage for having three six footers in [Katie] Messing, [Lindsay] Stalzer and Jaja [Santiago]. We need to neutralize their ceiling both on offense and defense. We also have to stop Stalzer from doing damage from the wing position. This is going to be an intense battle, that’s for sure,” said Petron head coach George Pascua.
Foton coach Villet Ponce-de Leon admitted Petron has the most solid lineup in the league.
“They have the league’s most seasoned players. We have the height, but the finals is an entirely different story. Petron has been together for quite some time. They are already familiar with each other and are capable of overcoming a huge disadvantage. We have to be ready because this team performs best when the stakes are high,” said Ponce-De Leon.
