PETRON Blaze and Rain or Shine will try to break their tie at the second spot when they face separate foes tonight in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Blaze Boosters, coming from a 98-85 win over Globalport on Friday, takes on sister team San Mig Coffee at 8 p.m. while Rain or Shine battles Meralco Bolts at 5:45 p.m.
Both the Blaze Boosters and the Elasto Painters are currently tied at the second position with identical 9-3 win-loss slates that made them strong contenders for the two twice-to-beat advantages going into the eight-team quarterfinals.
The other contender is solo leader Ginebra (10-2) and solo fourth running Talk ‘N Text (7-5). The Tropang Texters, who lost to Rain or Shine, 88-90, on Saturday could still claim the second twice-to-beat edge if they win their two remaining matches and if Petron and Rain or Shine lose in their two remaining games.
In the lower half of the standings, Meralco and San Mig Coffee, two teams bearing similar 5-7 records, need to win today to assure themselves of a quarterfinals slot. Otherwise, Alaska, which is bearing a 4-9 card could forge a knockout playoff for the last quarterfinals berth if it wins against Barako Bull on January 19.
