The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) lauded the revision made to the football tournament draw mechanics in the upcoming 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
The Asian Football Confederation approved the revision on Thursday while the draw takes place today (Saturday).
“We are delighted with the changes made in the SEA Games draw mechanics,” said PFF general secretary Edwin Gastanes.
After drawing flak from several participating national teams, the Football Association of Malaysia, Olympic Council of Malaysia and Malaysia SEA Games Organizing Committee amended the draw procedure both in the Men’s Un-der-22 and Women’s competitions in a meeting on Monday.
Under the new process, host nation Malaysia and 2015 SEA Games gold medalist Thailand were seeded in Group A and B, respectively.
Initially, Malaysia had the privilege to choose which of the two groups to play in but several Asean Football Federa-tion members disagreed.
The men’s competition is divided into groups of five and six while the women’s contest is divided into two groups of three teams each.
Based on their performance in the previous editions of the biennial meet, the Philippine men’s national football team was placed in Pot 3 while the women’s squad was put in Pot 2.
