Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President Mariano Araneta was elected to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Executive Committee during the 26th Ordinary Congress of the continental football governing body on April 30 in Manama, Bahrain.
Araneta took one of the 11 seats available and is the second Filipino to be given a position in the said committee; the first was the late and former PFF president Rene Adad.
Araneta said that he is deeply honored of the support that the other AFC member associations has bestowed upon him and said that he is looking forward to spread the Philippines’ vision for football among the other countries in Asia.
“I look forward to a fruitful involvement in the AFC for the next four years, and will aspire that the viewpoint from the Philippines, an emerging football nation is heard as the AFC works to improve and develop football in Asia,” Araneta said.
The newly elected officers of the AFC is led by current president Sheik Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who was re-elected for another four years after being unopposed in the election for the said position.
