Francis Casey Alcantara and Treat Huey powered the Philippines’ entry into the second round of the Davis Cup Group 2 Asia/Oceania via a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 beating of their Sri Lankan rivals Sharmal Dissanayake and Dineshkanthan Thangarajah on Saturday at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City.
A day after Patrick John Tierro and Ruben Gonzales won their opening singles matches that gave Filipinos a 2-0 edge, Alcantara and Huey blasted their rivals in the last three sets of the doubles event to complete the sweep.
The Philippines will meet the winner between Taiwan and Lebanon in the second round in July.
The Philippine team with non-playing team captain Roland Kraut now has the luxury to field any players in the reverse singles event because both are now considered non-bearing games after the Filipinos won the first three matches.
The Philippines now enjoys a commanding 9-0 lead against Sri Lanka.
