• PH archers plunge into KO stage action in Youth Olympic Games


    Archers Bianca Roxas Gotuaco and Luis Gabriel Moreno resume their campaign in the knockout stage of the recurve individual event in the 2nd Youth Olympic Games being held at the Fangshan Archery Field in Nanjing, China.

    Gotuaco faces 22nd pick Miasa Koike of Japan in the women’s division while Moreno takes on the No. 3 seed Marcus D’almeida of Brazil in the men’s class.

    In the ranking round, Gotuaco scored 642 points to get the No. 11 position while Moreno nailed 605 points for the 30th seed.

    The first round of the knockout phase will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

    In gymnastics, Ava Lorein Verdeflor guns for medal in the finals of women’s uneven bars event at 8 p.m. also on Saturday at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium.

    Verdeflor will be up against Wang Yan of China, Iosra Abdelaziz of Italy, Seda Tutkhalyan of Russia, Sae Miyakawa of Japan, Laura Jurca of Romania, Antonia Alicke of Germany and Stephanie Hernandez of Mexico.

    In athletics, Filipino-Canadian Zion Rose Nelson sees action in the women’s 400-meter dash Final B along with Astrid Balanta Colorado of Colombia, Tiffany James of Jamaica, Yana Kachur of Ukraine Shaquania Dorsett of Bahamas, Maria Simancas of Venezuela and Lyubov Ushakova of Kazakhstan.

    Host China remains on top of the medal tally with 14 golds, four silvers and 11 bronzes followed by Russia (9-7-5), Italy (5-3-2), United States (4-1-4), Hungary (4-0-4), Great Britain (3-3-3), Taiwan (3-2-1), France (3-0-5), Iran (3-0-1) and Ukraine (2-3-3).
