The team composed of paddlers from the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation topped the Small Boat Open 500-meter event; beating strong rivals from the region including reigning Southeast Asian Games champion Thailand. They also outclassed India, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Iran and Hong Kong.

The Philippines continued its remarkable showing in the Asian meet as it ruled the Small Boat Open 200-meter category, edging Japan, Indonesia, India and Thailand in the final round.

“We are standing proud and honored as Filipinos as the Philippine flag is hoisted as the champion among all Asian nations. For the country, for our Philippine flag. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas. Laban para sa bansa,” said national team head coach Len Escollante, a member of the women’s national volleyball team that won gold medal in the 1993 Southeast Asian Games held in Singapore.

Last year, the PCKF won five golds, three silvers and three bronzes in the prestigious International Canoe Federation (ICF) Dragon Boat World Championships held in Poznan, Poland.

They dominated the juniors men 500m, juniors men 200m, seniors men 200m 20-seater, seniors men 200m 10-seater and seniors mixed 200m.

  1. Hi Emil, thank you so much for the very nice article about our paddlers’ remarkable performance in the Asian Dragon Boat Championships in Palembang. Your promotions of our Filipino paddlers is really boosting their motivation very much. Please keep on helping us promote paddling in the Philippines, so that we can reach out to a lot of young people in our coastal communities to get into paddling as a means to improve life.
