PH bags 3 gold medals in Vietnam track meet


The national track and field squad copped three golds, four silvers and four bronzes in the 29th Ho Chi Minh City International Track and Field Vietnam Open 2013 being held at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh.

Benigno Marayag and former Southeast Asian Games champion Henry Dagmil led the charge of the national squad as they dominated the men’s long jump event. Marayag registered a 7.43-meter output to claim the gold medal while Dagmil secured the silver medal with 7.41m. Vietnamese Nguyen Van Hue settled for bronze with 7.40m.

Veteran Eliezer Sunang also made his presence felt by ruling the men’s shot put. He submitted 16.10m to outclass Vietnam’s Tran Minh Tuan (14.55m) and Tran Phu Hoang Long (13.70m).

Riezel Buenaventura took the team’s third gold as she dominated the women’s pole vault by virtue of her 3.70m showing, beating silver medalist Truong Thi Thu of Vietnam (3.40m) and Chuan Yu Tian of Malaysia (3.20m).

The other silver medals were from Danilo Fresnido in the men’s javelin throw (66.11m), Katherine Kay Santos in the women’s long jump (5.88m) and Laos SEA Games gold medalist Rosie Villarito in the women’s javelin throw (48.11m) while the bronzes were delivered by Evalyn Palabrica (women’s javelin throw, 42.86m), Jordan Paul Billones (men’s 800m run, 1:52.92), Christopher Ulboc (men’s 3,000m, 9:29.8) and Ernest John Obiena (men’s pole vault, 4.70m).
