• PH bags 45 medals in Special Olympics

    The Filipino differently-abled athletes made waves in the prestigious 2015 World Games Special Olympics by winning 22 golds, 14 silvers and nine bronzes in Los Angeles, California.

    Gymnasts Jovelyn Gacayan and Tanya Denamarca led the charge of the country as they bagged four gold medals each in rhythmic gymnastics.

    Gacayan topped the ribbon (6.350), ball (8.650), rope (7.988) and all around (30.274) events in Division 13 while Denamarca ruled the ribbon (6.388), hoop (6.650), rope (6.856) and all around (28.068) categories in Division 15.

    Fellow gymnast Shella Galvez, trackster Raymund Macasaet and swimmer Danilo Roman contributed two gold apiece.

    Galvez got golds in rope and ball in Division 12E, Macasaet pocketed mints in 50m run (10.53) and 25m run (6.09) in Division 16, and Roman dominated the 200m freestyle (4:11.04) and 100m breaststroke (2:03.55) in Division M7.

    The other gold medalists were Filbert Canete (badminton singles Division 62), Mizzel Dawa (swimming 25m freestyle Division F08), Gia Gestopa (athletics long jump Division F07), Mark Inductivo (powerlifting squat Division M23), Catherine Managay (athletics 100m run Division 17), Michael Mora (powerlifting squat Division M24) and

    Ronnin Talaboc (swimming 100m freestyle M13).

    Earning silver medals were Denamarca (ribbon Division 12C), Galvez (ball and ribbon), Inductivo (bench press), Managay (200m run), Mora (all combination and dead lift), Canete and Jesabell Mistula (badminton mixed doubles), Merasol Cutamora (athletics 200m Division 14), Sherilyn Lacuesta (athletics 200m run Division 10), Rey Odicta (athletics 100m run Division 59), Athlea Padilla (gymnastics ball Division 12B) and Judel Teves (athletics 200m run Division 49).

    The bronzes were from Inductivo (dead lift and all combination), Padilla (all around), Aira Aguado (athletics 200m run Division 05), Alden Jimenez (powerlifting bench press Division M3), Michael Jordan (athletics 200m run Division 45), the gymnastics group ball of Galvez, Gacayan, Denamarca and Padilla, and the soccer 5 A-Side unified team of Mark Moran, Mike Danieve, Ryan Ilaya, Roy Abraham, Marc Flores, Arjay Galang and Ken Sibaen.
