The national poomsae team snatched two golds, four silvers and two bronzes in the 2014 Asian Tae kwon do Poomsae Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
World championship veteran Jean Pierre Sabido led the charge of Filipinos as he topped the men’s individual freestyle event in the tournament participated by more than 20 countries in the region.
Reigning Southeast Asian Games champions Vidal Marvin Gabriel, Dustin Mella and Raphael Enrico Mella won the country’s second gold by topping the men’s team category.
“We’ve been preparing since the start of the year. We also had one week military training with the Marine Corps a month prior to competition. This was to prepare our minds for this competition. We basically lived in the central taekwondo headquarters training eight hours a day,” Sabido said.
Sabido along with Ernesto Guzman Jr. and Glenn Lava secured a silver in the men’s team senior category while Gabriel and Juvenile Crisostomo also wound up second in the pair freestyle event.
Lava, Rani Ann Ortega, Janice Lagman, Jeordan Dominguez and Jaylord Seridon added one silver in the mixed team freestyle before Jocel Ninobla claimed another silver in the female individual freestyle class.
The bronze medals were from Ortega, Lagman and Crisostomo (women’s team senior) and June Ninobla (masters category).
“We had a stronger finish this edition of the Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championships as we surpass our previous showing in 2012. We had a Korean coach, Mr. Jaewoo Song, who trained us for a month,” added Sabido.
In the 2012 edition held in Vietnam, the team went home with one gold, two silvers and one bronze.
