PH begins campaign in Asean Chess


The Philippines will be parading a 38-man national junior team in the 14th Asean Age Group Chess Championships beginning today at the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Woman International Master (WIM) Janelle Mae Frayna, Jan Jodilyn Fronda and Marie Antoinette San Diego banner the country’s campaign as they compete in the centerpiece girls’ 20-under category.

Seeing action in the girls’ 16-under are Shania Mendoza, Ynna Canape and Ella Moulic while Samantha Glo Revita, May Alcantara and Alexis Osena take part in the girls’ 14-under; Allaney Doroy, Natori Diaz and Bea Mendoza participate in the girls’ 12-under; Mae Baclayon, Joy Tan and Checy Aliena battle in the girls’ 10-under; and Rhea Canino, Joannah Olay and Jerlyn San Diego fight in girls’ 8-under.

Philippine National Games standard chess champion International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia, FIDE Master Haridas Pascua and National Master (NM) Alcon Datu are entered in the Open 20-under division.

Other members of the team are FM Paulo Bersamina, Jerad Docena and NM Giovanni Mejia (Open 16-under); Daryl Saman-tila, Carl Valdellon, John Miciano and John Jacutina (Open 14-under); Stephen Pangilinan, Julius Gonzales and Istraelito Rilloraza (Open 12-under); John Bravo, Ronald Canino, Daniel Quizon and Adrian de Luna (Open 10-under); and Jerish Velarde, Michael Concio, Alekhine Nouri and James Calacday (Open 8-under).

The tournament runs until June 14.
