The Philippine karatedo team has so far won two silver and two bronze medals in the ongoing 2015 Karatedo Thailand Open Championships being held at the Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Chloe Bernadette Liamson (girls’ 12-under kata) and Jaime Enrique Villegas (male cadet kata) delivered the first two silver medals of the country in the tournament participated by more than 800 athletes from 30 nations.
“It’s a good start for us. Our young karatekas showed a lot of potential in this tournament. They performed well and these kids are the future of Philippine karatedo,” said Philippine Karatedo Federation Secretary General Raymund Lee Reyes
John Enrico Vasquez (male cadet kata) and River Lopez (boys’ 12-Under kata) chipped in one bronze each in their respective categories.
“We are exposing them in international competitions like this to further hone their skills for future big tournaments. It’s part of our grassroots development program,” he added.
Reyes is looking for more medals in the coming days especially when the senior team plunges into action on Day 2 of the tournament.
“Hindi pa lumalaban yung members ng national team. Marami pang posibleng mag-medal. Malalakas ang mga kalaban, marami ang kasali pero tiwala kami dahil matagal naming pinaghandaan ito,” Reyes said.
