Five members of the national junior Tae kwon do team were booted out in the opening day of the 10th World Junior Tae kwon do Championships being held at the Taipei Arena in Taiwan.
Aaron James Galita (boys’ featherweight), Francesca Arianne Agojo (girls’ light heavyweight), Alejandro Joel Felipe (boys’ heavyweight), Stephanie Osio (girls’ featherweight) and Brighty Rio Marie Salazar (girls’ heavyweight) were the first Filipino casualties in the tournament participated by a total of 774 jins.
Galita posted early victories over Badri Paksashvill of Georgia (7-4) and Jakub Posadzy of Poland (1-0) before bowing to Azamat Ussenov of Kazakhstan (8-10) in the third round.
On the other hand, Agojo lost to Kuo Yi Chun of Taiwan (0-20), Felipe succumbed to Brandon Ivey of US (5-6), Osio surrendered to Tena Kunovic of Croatia (4-7) and Salazar was blanked by Sabela Lopez Riobo of Spain (0-5) in their opening-round games.
Left standing are Christian Mark Duntugan (finweight), Gian Carlo Gutierrez (fly), Ryel Joshua Ramirez (bantam), Alfred Jason Abanto (light), John Christian Mapalo (light middle), Michael Laurence Licudine (middle) and John Michael Agno (light heavy) in the boys’ division and Irene Therese Bermejo (fin), Cleio Marie Banez (fly), Gabrielle Hernandez (light middle) and Bea Muriel Go (middle) in the girls’ class.
Colleen Heria (bantam), Ma. Kaye Shannelle Romuar (welter), King Philip Pineda (feather), Gian Francis Rubio (welter), Leslie Marie Agyamoc (light) and Ryel Joshua Ramirez (bantam) also failed in their respective campaigns in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games qualifying tournament held last week in the same venue.
