Four athletes from the Philippines will see action in Under Armour’s Test of Will finals on May 28 at the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.
Derrick Carlo Mercado, Merwon Torres, Noelle Wenceslao and Zoe Pond-McPherson bested the other 300 participants in the national eliminations held from April 16 and 17. The four went through endurance tests in burpees, squats, dumbbell presses and pull-ups.
Mercado finished first in the male category with 164 repetitions while Merwon Torres finished second with 151 repetitions.
Wenceslao topped the female category with 243 total repetitions followed by Zoe Pond-McPherson with 213 repetitions.
The 36-year old Wenceslao was one of the first three Filipinas who reached the summit of the Mount Everest. Wenceslao is also a member of the national dragonboat team that won gold medals in a world meet in Australia.
Pond-McPherson, who competed in the 2015 Crossfit Games Pacific Regional in Wallongong, Australia, earned the moniker “The Fittest Woman in Philippine Crossfit.”
“I am hoping that the dragonboat confidence I have, be carried unto this competition. I will put my whole heart and training into this and I hope, it gets what it deserves,” said Wenceslao on Tuesday at the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at Shakey’s in Malate, Manila.
“I trained hard for this and I will do what I can do,” said the 28-year old Mercado, a native of Pampanga.
The Philippines will be battling against host Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
