The Philippine women’s team split its first two assignments in the World Cup of Softball 9 being held at Bill Barber Park Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine, California.
The Filipina batters known as the Blu Girls outclassed Venezuela, 3-0, in their first game before absorbing a stunning 0-7 loss to Mexico in their second match.
The Blu Girls is sharing the second spot with a 1-1 mark along with Japan (1-1). They are behind solo leader Canada (2-0). Mexico is in third place with 1-0 followed by Venezuela (1-2), Taiwan (0-2) and US (0-0).
On Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), the Filipinas meet the Canadians in the morning then will face the Americans in their afternoon schedule.
Veteran pitchers Francesca Foti, Annalie Benjamen, Rizza Bernar–dino and Veronica Belleza are leading the squad along with Alexandra Louise Zuluaga, Lorna Adorable, Elma Parohinog, Marlyn Francisco, Kiska Piad, Isabella Ann Mendoza, Jullian Tanaka, Arianne Vallestero, Angelie Ursabia, Luzviminda Embudo, Whell Camral, Francesca Altomonte, Garie Blando, Leia Ruiz, Alleah Laxamana, Jaexenne Balilea, Dani Gilmore, Gabrielle Rodas and Morgan Stuart.
Multi-titled mentor Ana Santiago is coaching the team.
Besides the World Cup, the team is also revving up for the 2014 Asian Games slated on September 19 to October 4 in Incheon, South Korea.
