The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) is sending a six-man team to the Konstantin Korotkov Memorial International Boxing tournament slated on May 14 to 20 in Khabarovsk, Russia.
Rogen Ladon (49kgs), Ian Clark Baustista (52kgs), Mario Fernandez (56kgs), Junel Cantancio (60kgs), World Youth champion Eumir Felix Marcial (64kgs) and Wilfredo Lopez (69kgs) will be up against the best boxers in Europe. National coaches Nolito Velasco and Elmer Pamisa will be calling the shots for the national squad while ABAP executive director Ed Picson is the team manager.
According to ABAP president Ricky Vargas, the tournament serves as the team’s build up for the 27th Southeast Asian Games come December in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.
The six boxers are currently in Cebu training with London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, World Junior bronze medalist Jade Bornea, Nico Magliquian, Dennis Galvan, Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar and James Palicte of the national squad.
Other possible tournaments for the Filipino boxers are the China Open for men and women in Guiyang (June 16 to 24), ASBC (Asian Boxing Confederation) Boxing Championship for elite men in Amman, Jordan (June 30 to July 9), 3rd International Boxing Women’s Tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan (August 6 to 12), Taipei City Boxing Tournament (August 14 to 21), AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association) Junior World in Kiev, Ukraine (August 17 to 26), AIBA World Boxing Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan (October 4 to 20) and the Tammer Cup for elite men in Tampere, Finland (November 21 to 24).
