Perlas Pilipinas absorbed a stinging 55-106 loss from defending champion Japan at the start of 2017 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s Asia Cup on Sunday at the Sree Kanteereva indoor stadium in Bengaluru, India.
Gemma Miranda was the only bright spot for the squad of head coach Patric Aquino as she led the squad with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. Jack Danielle Animam posted six points, nine rebounds and two blocks also for Philippines.
The Filipinas struggled overall from the field, shooting just 20-of-68 while their counterparts had a better shooting clip, 40-of-82.
Playing against a world-class opponent, the PH cagebelles had a rough start and trailed early, 2-18. Japan erected a 64-33 in the third period and was never threatened since then.
Evelyn Mawuli led Japan with 21 points, while Manami Fujioka had six points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Filipinas, who are bracketed in Group B, battle Australia on Monday.
