Southeast Asian (SEA) Games bound men’s cycling team tries to regain respect when they go for the gold in various team competitions in the 29th edition of regional biennial sports conclave which starts August 14 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Internationalist and veteran rider Norberto Oconer, head coach of the men’s national team on Tuesday said, that his riders are conducting regular training -– both in track and oval putting premium on scientific strength and psychological conditioning.
“Our riders are in high spirit. They spend almost 10-12 hours of practice. They want to bring the gold especially in the team events-like the Team Time Trial (TTT), “ said national coach Oconer.
“Our riders’ team spirit are worth commendable. They can do it,” Oconer said confidently, himself a gold medalist in the regional meet. He pointed however the lack of international exposure by some of his riders.
The members of the men’s national team are Mark Galedo, George Oconer, John Mier, Ronald Oranza, Jerry Aquino, Boots Cayubit, Rustom Lim, Felipe Marcelo and Romnic Perez.
Out of the nine national riders, three are enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces to include Oconer and Cayubit, both in the air force, and Oranza of the navy.
There are three main events to be contested in cycling –road race, BMX and track. The sub events include criterium, mass start and team time trial.
