Veteran campaigners Patrick John Tierro and Ruben Gonzales will start the country’s campaign versus Sri Lanka in the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group 2 tie today at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City.
Tierro will be facing Harshana Godamanna in the first singles at 4 p.m. while Gonzales battles Sharmal Dissanayake in the second singles.
The crucial doubles play will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. with Filipino-American Treat Conrad Huey and former Australian Open juniors doubles champion Francis Casey Alcantara meeting Godamanna and Dissanayake.
The reverse singles matches are scheduled on Sunday as Tierro fights Dissanayake and Gonzales meets Godamanna.
Teams are allowed to change nominations one hour before the game.
National University mentor Karl Santamaria serves as the Philippine team’s head coach while Roland Kraut of De La Salle University is the non-playing team captain.
“We are inviting everyone to come and support us. One of our supposed advantage is the hometown crowd,” said Santamaria
The Philippines holds a commanding 8-0 head-to head lead against Sri Lanka.
The Filipinos latest victory was in 2014 when they beat the Sri Lankans, 3-1, in the first round of the Group 2 tie held in Colombo Sri Lanka.
The other victories were in 2006 (3-0), 2001 (3-0), 1987 (5-0), 1977 (4-0), 1975 (3-1), 1962 (4-0) and 1958 (5-0).
