THE South Korean government has donated to the Philippines a landing craft utility (LCU), which officials said would boost the capability of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR).
But according to Navy Commander Vice Admiral Jesus Millan, the LCU, which arrived on May 30, has to undergo machinery and equipment repairs.
Cost of repairs was estimated at P26 million. According to Millan, a brand-new LCU costs around P6 billion.
“This was donated by [South] Korea. Once it becomes operational, it will boost our troop transport support and HADR capability,” Millan said.
Since it was a donation, according to him, the Philippines has to shoulder the shipping cost of more or less P16 million.
Besides the LCU, Millan said South Korea also donated 16 rubber boats.
The LCU is almost the same as that being used by the Philippines but the one donated by South Korea has superior capabilities since it is the latest model. FERNAN MARASIGAN
