The national poomsae [forms]team started its campaign with one gold medal on Day 1 of the 9th World Tae kwon do Poomsae Championships being held in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
World champions Jean Pierre Sabido, Ernesto Guzman Jr. and Glenn Lava have successfully defended their crown in the men’s senior team event, beating Americans Justing Wang, Chau Truong and Anh Nguyen, who settled for second.
Mexico’s Juan Enrique Luna, Juan Martinez and Oscar Mendiola Cruz and Turkey’s Volkan Yalcinkaya, Kemal Yilmaz and Mustafa Yilmaz were the bronze winners.
“It’s a good start for us and we are hoping to win more medals in the coming days. We still have chances in other events and we’re optimistic,” Sabido said.
Former world titlists Ma. Carla Janice Lagman and Rani Ann Ortega and new member Juvenile Faye Crisostomo were not as lucky as they wound up fifth in the women’s senior team event.
Vietnam’s Tuyet Van Chau, Thi Le Kim Nguyen and Thuy Xuan Linh Nguyen bagged the gold medal and Taiwan’s Hsiang Ting Chen, Ying, Hsian Lee and Yi Hsuan Chen pocketed the silver. Turkey and US got one bronze each.
Crisostomo also missed a podium finish, ending up sixth overall in the female freestyle individual event (over-17) with American Adalis Munoz, Russian Yulia Popova and Vietnamese Thi Thuy Dung Ngo earning the top three spots.
The Filipino jins are hoping to add more medals on Day 2 with Guzman seeing action in the Under 30 Individual Male.
Lagman, Lava, Ortega, Joerdan Dominguez and Jaylord Seridon are also competing in the freestyle mixed team event (over 17) while Raphael Enrico Mella (Under 30 individual male) and Rinna Babanto (junior individual female) take part in their respective event.
