The national poomsae tae kwon do team has delivered a lot of good news this year, winning in major international tournaments including in two prestigious world championships.
The team bannered by veteran campaigner Jean Pierre Sabido, won three golds, two silvers and three bronzes in the 9th World Tae kwon do Poomsae Championships held in Aguascalientes, Mexico on October 30 to November 2.
Sabido topped the Individual Freestyle Male (Over 17) then joined Ernesto Guzman Jr. and Glenn Lava in ruling the Team Male Under 30 event. Lava, Jaylord Seridon, Jeordan Dominguez, Rani Ann Ortega and Ma. Carla Janice Lagman earned the other gold in the Team Freestyle (Over 17).
The silvers were from Under 40 Individual Male (Guzman) and Pair Freestyle Over 17 (Dominguez and Jocel Lyn Ninobla) while the bronzes were got from the Team Male Under 30 (Dustin Jacob Mella, Raphael Enrico Mella and Rodolfo Reyes Jr.), Under 17 Individual Female (Babanto) and Individual Freestyle Female (Babanto) categories.
Sabido was adjudged as the Male Most Valuable Player in the Freestyle Category.
In the 2014 World Tae kwon do Hanmadang Championships held in Pohang, South Korea in August, the Filipino jins bagged four golds and one silver.
Dominguez (All-around Breaking Male); Juvenile Faye Crisostomo (All-around breaking Female); Babanto, Ninobla and Janna Dominique Oliva (Authorized Team); and Dominguez, Seridon, Reyes, Crisostomo, Joe Vanni Colega, McAvyngyr Alob, Clement Tsulong Tan, Elisabella Cesista and Leanarda Nicole Landrito (Team Competition) were accounted for the country’s gold medals.
Besides the world meets, the poomsae squad copped two golds, four silvers and two bronzes in the 3rd Asian Poomsae Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in May and two bronzes in the 13th World University Tae kwon do Championships in Hohhot, China in June.
The Philippine Tae kwon do Association is looking to continue its impressive showing come 2015 including its campaign in the 28th Asian Games to be held in Singapore in June.
