Promising netters John Bryan Decasa Otico and Arthur Craig Pantino settled for the runner-up honors in the 2016 AGS International Junior Championships boys’ doubles held at the Sultan Hotel Tennis Courts in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Otico and Pantino were down in the first set, 0-2, against Indonesians Iswandaru Kusumo Putro and Haekai Ramadhan when the Filipino duo opted to retire because of injury.
To advance to the finals, Otico and Pantino earned an opening round bye then toppled Thailand’s Tonkla Mulada and Noppadol Noikor in the second round, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5; fourth seeds Christian Didier Chin of Malaysia and Hazem Naow of Syria in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 7-6 (5); and Indonesians Akbar Hidayat and Hendrawan Susanto in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-4.
In singles, Otico scored victories over Steven Harianto Poedji of Indonesia in the second round, 6-2, 6-0; and 10th pick Yun Ruei Wen of Taiwan in the quarterfinals but lost to second seed Rimpei Kawakami of Japan in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-3, 1-6.
Pantino, on the other hand, was booted out in the first round by Fitriadi Rifqi of Indonesia, 3-6, 2-6.
Another Filipino entry Stephen Lhuillier also absorbed a first-round loss at the hands of Taiwanese qualifier Hung Hsun Huang, 1-6, 0-6, in the tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation.
