• PH master Fronda keeps hold of lead in Macau chess tilt


    Untitled Jan Jodilyn Fronda notched her fourth straight victory to stay on top spot in the girls’ 20-under of the Asean Age-Group Chess Championships being held at the Cotai Sands Conference Centre in Macau, China.

    Fronda outplayed compatriots Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Janelle Mae Frayna in the third round and WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego in the fourth to remain unscathed with a perfect score of four points.

    Frayna is sharing the second place with Malaysian Tan Li Ting with three points each while San Diego and Cherry Ann Mejia are in a group of two-pointers.

    In the fifth round, Fronda battles WFM Bibissara Assaubayeva of Kazakhstan, Frayna takes on Ting, Mejia faces Nguyen Truong Bao Tran of Vietnam and San Diego meets Azhar Puteri Rifqah Fahada of Malaysia.

    In the boys’ 18-under category, Vince Angelo Medina took the solo lead with an unblemished record of 4-0. He stunned International Master Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam in the third then outclassed Mohammad Agus Kurniawan of Indonesia in the fourth.

    In the boys’ 20-under, Paulo Bersamina regained the lead after beating Nguyen Thi Mai Hung in the fourth round.

    Bersamina improved to 3.5 points while Nguyen Anh Khoi of Vietnam and Tin Jingyao of Singapore fell to second with three points apiece.
