Following the visit of a ranking Myanmar military official Wednesday, the Philippines and Myanmar are planning to beef up their defense relations.
This was announced by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin following the successful visit and courtesy call of Myanmar Defense Services commander-in-chief Senior General Min Aug Hlaning at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City last July 2.
“We look forward to the possibility of having a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Defense Cooperation with Myanmar, which can serve as a framework to promote Defense Cooperation between our two countries,” Gazmin said.
“The MOU will enable us to cooperate in various fields, such as defense dialogues, education, and training exchanges, among others,” he added.
The DND chief also thanked Senior General Min Aung Hliang for the assistance rendered by the Myanmar government to Filipinos affected by super typhoon “Haiyan” (Yolanda) in November 2013 and congratulated Myanmar’s successful hosting of the 24th ASEAN Summit last May 10 and 11 and the 8th ASEAN Defense Minister’s Meeting (ADMM) on May 18-22 of this year.
“I look forward to visiting Myanmar again for the ADMM retreat in Bagan, Myanmar, on November 18 and 19, 2014,” Gazmin said in closing. PNA
