Top Asian teams will compete in the Philippine National Ice Hockey Tournament that will be held from November 25 to 28 at the newly opened outdoor ice skating rink of the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
“It’s going to be a tough league,” Pet Tigaronita, Secretary of the Federation of Ice Hockey League, Inc. told The Manila Times.
The Philippine team has been preparing for quite a while. Right after the competition in Malaysia, they practically practice four times a day,” Tigaronita said.
One team from Malaysia, three from Singapore and two from Thailand are among those that will see action in the tournament.
Tigaronita said that the Pilipinas ice hockey team has a strong chance of winning particularly in the Bantams (under 16) division because some of its players just moved up from the Peewee (under 13) class that won a prize in the 2015 Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament in September.
Tigaronita said that Pandoo Nation from Singapore is likely to become Pilipinas’ tough rival.
“We definitely want to win. The players should be motivated to play because we have our home crowd advantage,” said Tigaronita.
Among the key players of Pilipinas are Carl Montano, who bagged the Best Forward plum in the Hong Kong Amateur Ice Hockey Tournament in September where Pilipinas emerged as champions and Francois Gautier, the team manager of OMNI insurance as well as the tournament director.
The admission in the tournament is free.
