Filipino netters John Bryan Decasa and Eric Olivarez posted opening-round victories to advance to the boys’ singles second round of the 7th Malacca International Junior Championship 2014 being held at the Malacca Tennis Complex in Malaysia.
The 14-year-old Decasa overpowered Itchya Meesommon of Thailand, 6-4, 6-3, while Olivarez, 15, outclassed Ahmad Faez Shamsuddin of Malaysia, 6-2, 6-1, in the Grade 4 tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation.
Decasa and Olivarez will have their hands full in the next round as they face No. 14 Achad Imam Maruf of Indonesia and No. 10 Joshua Liu of Singapore, respectively. Maruf and Liu drew first-round byes.
In girls’ singles, fourth-seeded Roxanne Resma, sixth-picked Khim Iglupas and ninth-ranked Maia Berndette Balce got opening-round byes.
In the second round, Resma faces Risa Fukutoku of Japan, who defeated Rukshika Wijesooriya of Sri Lanka (6-3, 6-4); Iglupas tackles Ni Putu Armini of Indonesia, who beat Vivien Klein of Germany (6-4, 6-1); and Balce meets Brooke Milner of Australia, who ousted Junsai Wang of China (7-6 , 6-0).
In doubles, the No. 2 pair of Iglupas and Resma takes on Malaysia’s Alyssa Boey and Yus Syazlin Yusri, a 6-0, 7-5 winner over Japan’s Risa Fukutoku and Rina Ohata, while Balce and Uzbek partner Melisa Berikova battle Indonesia’s Shevita Aulana and Novella Putri, who scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tara Afzalirad of Iran and Shi Pei Loo of Malaysia.
