The Philippines drew first blood in the 2014 Asia-Oceania Group 2 Philippines versus Pakistan tie on Friday at the Philippine Columbian Association clay-sand court in Plaza Dilao, Manila.
Philippine Open semifinalist Patrick John Tierro scored a straight-set victory over Aqeel Khan of Pakistan, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4, in the opening singles of the best-of-five tie.
Filipino-American Ruben Gonzales was scheduled to play Samir Iftikhar in the second singles on Friday.
Playing in the crucial doubles game are Filipino-American Treat Conrad Huey and Johnny Arcilla against Khan and Aisam Qureshi on Saturday while Tierro faces Iftikhar and Gonzales meets Khan in the reverse singles on Sunday.
Both teams are allowed to change nominations one hour before the match.
The winner of the Philippines-Pakistan tie will advance to the Group II finals in September against the victorious in the Thailand-Kuwait game. The Group II finals winner will be promoted to Group I in the 2015 season.
