The national junior powerlifting team won seven gold, two silver and three bronze medals in the 2013 Asian Powerlifting Championships held in Ahwaz, Iran.
Promising lifter Regie Ramirez, 20, spearheaded the country’s campaign by winning four gold medals in record fashions in the 53-kilogram event. He ruled the squat event (440 lbs.), bench press (248 lbs.), deadlift (579 lbs) and total (1,168 lbs.). These are all new national and Asian junior records, according to Philippine Powerlifting Association official Nina Oca.
Raymond Debuque delivered three gold medals in the 120-kg weight class as he dominated the bench press (440 lbs.), deadlift (545 lbs) and total (1,515 lbs.). He added one silver medal in the squat category with a 529-lb output in the tournament participated in by 132 lifters from Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Japan, Oman, Mongolia, Pakistan and Indonesia.
The youngest member of the team, Clark Cruz, 18, added one silver and three bronze medals in the 83-kg category. Cruz placed second in deadlift (540 lbs.) and wound up third in squat (518 lbs.), bench press (308 lbs.) and total (1,366 lbs.).
In other results, Aldrin Caparas placed fourth overall in bench press (380 lbs.) of the 93-kg division.
