Power-punching Nesthy Petecio advanced to finals of the women’s bantamweight division in the 2015 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships being held at the Wulanchabu Sports Gymnasium in Wulanchabu, China.
Petecio, a silver medalist in the Southeast Asian Games, outclassed Basumatary Pwilao of India via unanimous decision in their semifinal match.
“Malakas siya at nakita ko na lugi ako sa dikitan kaya nilaro ko sa labas [she’s strong and I observed I was at a disadvantage on the inside so I fought her from a distance],” said the 23-year-old Petecio.
“I also saw her right straights coming, so I guess she also got a bit frustrated when I was able to avoid them and then score on my counterpunches,” she added.
The Davao City pride arranged a championship showdown with Asian Indoor Games champion Pieamwilai Laopeam of Thailand.
Petecio earlier defeated Japanese Sana Kawano in the quarterfinals.
The other members of the team – former world champion and four-time SEA Games gold medalist Josie Gabuco, Irish Magno and Riza Pasuit – failed to reach the medal round in their respective weight classes.
The team is handled by Barcelona Olympics bronze medalist Roel Velasco and former national mainstay Mitchel Martinez.
