FILIPINO bantamweight Michael Angelon Plania used his blistering speed to score a unanimous victory over Georgian Joto Tabosvili in the 2013 Amateur International Boxing Association’s Junior Boxing Championship on Sunday in Kiev, Ukraine.
Plania unleashed numbers of crisp punches to blast through the defense of the lanky Tavosvili who became helpless against the Filipino’s quick jabs and overhand shots.
Plania’s compatriot Jayson Daming (46kgs, pinweight) of Cagayan de Oro lost a very tight contest to Kim Bi of Korea.
The tournament, held every two years since 2001, features boxers aged 15-16 years old. It was formerly known as the Amateur International Boxing Association Cadet World Championships. There are 13 weight categories ranging from 46 kgs (101 lbs) to 80+kgs (over 176 lbs.).
Tuesday will see Cebu’s Hipolito Banal Jr., the younger brother of professional boxer AJ Banal, fighting against Eljan Gafarli of Azerbaijan in their 48 kgs light flyweight match of the event participated in by 356 boxers around the world.
Another Filipino, Paul Gilbert Galagnao of Cagayan de Oro will fight on Wednesday versus Hungarian Istvan Szaka.
The Filipino boxers are under the tutelage of former Olympians Ronald Chavez and Romeo Brin while the delegation head is Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines Inc. Executive Director Ed Picson.
