PH pugs fly to Kazakhstan tournament

THE Philippine men’s boxing team, headed by 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar, Dennis Galvan and Charly Suarez, will compete in the President Cup tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan on July 7.

Executive Director Ed Picson of Alliances of Boxing Associations of the Philippines (ABAP) said that the Filipino boxers’ participation in the meet would help them evaluate whom to send to the upcoming 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea on September 19 to October 4.

“This is very important part of the selection process for the Asian Games and the coaches will make their recommendations after this event,” Picson said. Another batch of boxers will leave for China on the 13th.

“We are also hoping to see big improvement in our boxers there,” added Picson.

Promising flyweight Saludar is optimistic that he would qualify to bag his second straight Asian Games gold for the country.

Leaving today. The boxers are accompanied by coaches Nolito Velasco and Elmer Pamisa.
