PH pugs post early wins in President’s Cup

Reigning Asian Games champion Rey Saludar and Charly Suarez posted similar victories in the opening round of the 2014 President’s Cup being held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The 26-year-old Saludar scored a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 unanimous decision win over Adilet Kurmetov of Kazakhstan while Suarez outclassed Am-mar Jabbar of Iraq via 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 unanimous decision victory.

Saludar faces Jorge Hernan- dez of Cuba in the next round while Suarez battles Jumsakbaev Jumsakbaev of Kazakhstan.

The other members of the team are Rogen Ladon and Dennis Galvan.

Ladon earned an opening round bye while Galvan takes on Battarsukh Chinzorig of Mongolia in the first round.

Meanwhile, eight members of the national boxing team gun for medals in the 2014 China Open International Boxing Tournament beginning on July 13 at the Guizhou Gymnasium in Guiyang Province.

Southeast Asian Games veteran Nesthy Petecio will spearhead the country’s campaign as she defends her crown in the women’s lightweight division.

Also seeing action are London Olympic Games veteran Mark Anthony Barriga, world champion Josie Gabuco, Ian Clark Bautista, Junel Cantancio, Eumir Marcial Mario Fernandez and Wilfredo Lopez.

The team sent by the Association Boxing Alliances in the Philippines is looking to surpass its one-gold, two-silver, one-bronze medal showing in the 2013 edition.
