Cynthia Tiu, team manager of the Philippine women’s basketball team said that the squad is set to defend its title in the second Discovery Women’s Basketball Invitational-Jesse M. Robredo Memorial Cup on August 22 to 25 in Naga City.
Tiu said she is expecting her wards to perform at their best since they are lobbying for inclusion in the Philippine contingent for the Myanmar Southeast Asian Games in December.
“We’re still lobbying for it and hopefully this [tournament]will help us,” said Tiu. “Right now, we are already endorsed by the SBP [Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas] last August 5 and they [Philippine Olympic Committee] are still deliberating on it.”
The Philippine Olympic Committee is yet to grant the women’s team a ticket to the SEA Games despite winning the silver medal in the 2011 biennial meet in Thailand.
Besides the Philippines, Singa-pore and Australia are the other participants in the Naga tournament.
Merencia Arayi, Joan Grajales, Chovi Borja and Ana Almazan will lead the Philippine team, among others.
