PH to face Taiwan in Asia-Oceania Davis Cup 2nd round

After sweeping Sri Lanka in the first round, the Philippines shifts its sights on its second-round rival Taiwan in the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group 2 tie.

The Philippines-Taiwan tie is scheduled on July 17 to 19 in Taiwan.

The Filipinos made it to the second round after blanking the Sri Lankans, 5-0, at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City.

Patrick John Tierro scored a come-from-behind 5-7, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 win over Harshana Godamanna in the first singles while Ruben Gonzales had an easy 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sharmal Dissanayake in the second singles.

Grand Slam campaigner Treat Conrad Huey and Australian Open juniors doubles champion Francis Casey Alcantara formally clinched the tie by virtue of their 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Sharmal Dissanayake and Dineshkantan Thangarajah in the doubles play.

Huey and Alcantara completed a sweet sweep following their victories over Sharmal Dissanayake, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, and Dineshkantan Thangarajah, 6-2, 6-3, respectively.

Taiwan, led by veteran ATP campaigner Lu Yen-Hsun, advance to the next round by scoring an equally impressive 5-0 sweep of Lebanon.

The other members of the Taiwan squad are Hung Jul-Chen, Wang Chieh-Fu and Ho Chih-Jen.

The Philippines holds a 4-2 edge against Taiwan. The Filipinos won in 1999, 1996 1993 and 1976 while the Taiwanese were victorious in 2010 and 2011.
