PH Volcanoes explode, win gold in Singapore Games

SINGAPORE: The Philippine Volcanoes fulfilled their vow of bringing home the gold medal after thrashing Malaysia, 24-7, on Sunday in the finals of the 28th Singapore Southeast Asian Games rugby sevens at the Choa Chu King Stadium.

Riding high on a five-game sweep of their elimination matches, the Filipinos were in sharp form in reasserting their supremacy over the Malaysians, whom they had beaten, 14-10, earlier in the day.

It was a huge improvement for the rugby squad, which took the silver medal when the sport was last played in the 2007 Thailand SEA Games.

Sharing the spotlight were the Volcanoes’ female counterparts, who garnered the bronze medal after outplaying Malaysia, 22-0, in the battle for third place.
