• PH wins 4 medals in Asian Canoe Sprint

Young paddlers Hermie Macaranas and Ojay Fuentes steered the national canoe-kayak team to a four-medal haul in the 2014 Southeast Asian Canoe Sprint Championships held at the Marina Bay Reservoir in Singapore.

Macaranas, a bronze medalist in the 2013 Myanmar Southeast Asian Games, earned a silver medal in the men’s 500-meter canoe singles after checking in at one minute and 58.95 seconds.

Myanmar’s Thant Zin Oo took the gold medal while Indonesia’s Muhamad Yunus Rustandi grabbed the bronze.

The 18-year-old Macaranas then connived with the Ojay Fuentes in winning the bronze medals in the men’s 500m canoe doubles and men’s 200m canoe doubles in the pre-SEA Games tournament participated by Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and host Singapore.

Fuentes, 16, also secured a bronze in the men’s 200m canoe singles.

Philippine Canoe-Kayak Federation (PCKF) head coach Lenlen Escollante said the tournament served as their build up for the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore.

They want to surpass their one-bronze showing in the canoe-kayak event.

“We’re focusing on these young athletes. We want to give them proper training and exposure and develop them for future international competitions,” said Escollante.

The PCKF also wants to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There will be two qualifying events next year —the World Championships and the Continental Qualification.
